Phnom Penh to Laos

The first full week of Jaya in the Field Project has been awesome, adventurous and stimulating. In Phnom Penh I met some interesting and familiar faces, and visited some magnificent temples. The sights of human plight, and the smell of diesel -- but the taste of mouth-watering soups -- yummy! Such treats for your senses. It's so nice to be recognized and simply remembered. The coffee and croissants and baguettes...even better than in Ottawa. However, after only 4 days in Phnom Penh, I set out for Laos. Vientiene doesn't entice me, -- too mundane except for the coffee and bakery joints. Heading to a 2-day elephant festival in Hongsa, Sainyabury province. Getting a ride with Markus, the director of the elephant camp in Luang Prabang. But the road! Talk about potholes and dust. Everything and everyone was covered in red by the time we arrived. Washed the dust from our bodies, bathing in the river with the elephants.
Met a Thai artist exhibiting at the festival, who was also involved in the elephant hospital project art exhibition in Thailand. Mentioned that my paintings were sold and the proceeds have been donated. What an uplifting feeling! Markus would love me to have an exhibition in Luang Prabang. Perhaps a future possibility.
Heading off to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) to meet my dear wife Martha and hopefully my son Nathan.
